Asian Subterranean termites are considered to develop expansive underground colonies that surpass easily the size of other termite species. This type creates mud carton nests within the structure’s walls. Their nests often contain termites in tens of thousands and have the capacity to hold sufficient amount of moisture during dry periods.
Damage causing facts
These termites are also referred to as ‘white ants’. They are destructive timber pest as they result in significant structural timber damage especially to commercial and domestic buildings. Living underground, these pests may eat the house down in just a couple of years of left unchecked. They can destroy roofing timbers and walls of any home in just 3 months of their construction.
According to reports, subterranean termites are found to cause more harm to homes than tempest, storms, floods and fire combined. This is what makes them real ‘dangerous’ for all wooden homes and commercial complexes.
Unfortunately, cost of repairing damages to the commercial building or home by subterranean termites is not covered by home insurance.
Their home
They generally construct central colony nest and then underground tunnels radiating by about 100 meter radius. The purpose is to search cellulose food source (timber). Often, they construct above ground nests that collects moisture within the wall cavities. It includes faulty guttering, shower recess or leaking pipes, etc. They travel in tubes, mud shelter, etc. that they create over any solid object.
They travel in such mud shelter tubes to stay protected from dehydration, sun-burn, predators as well as to maintain high humidity environment. The latter is crucial for their survival and growth
Behavior
These termites are stated to be highly secretive in nature. They prefer to enter any building through those areas that are otherwise inaccessible to inspection. It includes fire heaths, in-fill patios, cracks present in concrete slab flooring and expansion joints.
These termites have the ability to pass through even a 2mm crack or expansion joint present between adjoining concrete. They also travel under floor tiles and parquetry to reach wall framing timbers.
Appearance and size
The Asian Subterranean termites can be found to be tiny in size, approximately half of that of a match head. They are soft bodied insects. Their underside body is brownish-yellow to caramel color while their top body part is black to dark brown color. Swarmers including their wings are approximately half inch in length. Their wings and entire body have tiny hairs.
Worried About Termite Damage? You Should be.
Usually you don’t see termites or the damages they cause until it’s too late. In fact, the annual cost of termite damage to buildings in the US is more than $5 billion- greater than that of fires, hurricanes and tornadoes combined.
